Throughout treatment, a therapist will use therapeutic perspectives to assist the client in making progress toward their individual goals. One of those perspectives could be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

CBT is a therapeutic modality that has shown to be effective for various concerns. These may include depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders, and low self-esteem.

Some principles that define Cognitive Behavioral Therapy include:

  • evidence-based
  • goal-oriented
  • collaborative
  • structured
  • skills-oriented
  • emphasizes practice

CBT is based on the idea that how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion), and how we act (behavior) are connected.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on increasing self-awareness of unhelpful thought patterns. Through this, we can improve our understanding of how our distorted thoughts contribute to increased feelings of distress and unhelpful or unhealthy behaviors.

In a nutshell, CBT works by identifying, disputing, and reframing unhelpful thinking so that one’s mindset, behaviors, and overall well-being improve with continued practice.
